Charlie Graves

August 2, 1939 — December 26, 2018

Charlie Graves, 79, passed away peacefully at home on December 26, 2018. He was born to Charles Robert (Bob) Graves, Jr, and Rhesa Cawyer Graves on August 2, 1939 in Crystal City, Texas. Charlie’s education began in Cotulla, Texas, continued at Tarleton State, and culminated with a business degree from North Texas State College. In 1970, Charlie moved his family to Sonora, Texas, to establish several new businesses. His interests there eventually led to an appointment as the Sutton County Auditor, a position he held for 27 years. Upon retirement, he relocated to San Angelo and began another career with CVCOG, Concho Valley Council of Governments. Later returning to Sonora, he assumed the role of City Manager. Regardless of his job or position, Charlie’s passion in the communities of his life was in public service through many varied civic organizations. Affectionally known as “Grandpa Charlie,” Charlie leaves a host of family, friends, and associates who mourn their loss of a good man. He is survived by his wife, Melody; children, Becky (Joseph) Melcher of Allen; Russell (Beth) Fritsch of Lubbock; Barry Graves of Mason; Dina Costa of Harker Heights; and Clay Graves of Sonora. His grandchildren include Charles Zachary Graves, Zane Cole Graves, Jackson Barry Graves, Margaret Caroline Graves, Sutton David Graves, Sarah Blakeley Borgman, Maximus Costa, Loren Fritsch, Lindsey Fritsch, Ryan Fritsch, and Matelyn Kate Melcher. His great-grandchildren include Blakely and Brinley Borgman. Other family also includes Al Costa, Caren and Glenn Rueffer, as well as numerous cousins and special friends. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; younger brother, Joel Lynn Graves; and his beloved pet, Hanna. Special thanks go to the angels on Charlie’s Hospice team: Christina Dominguez, Ray Galindo, Cindy Ganey, and Miranda Saldivar. A Celebration of Charlie’s life will be held at a later date. The family asks that family and friends consider memorials to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), 317 Koberlin, San Angelo, Texas, 76903; or another favorite charity.
