Dr. Gary Arthur Nussey

July 30, 1956 — July 19, 2024

Dr. Gary Arthur Nussey died unexpectedly on Friday, July 19, 2024, due to complications from a pulmonary embolism. He was surrounded by his loving family as he left this world.

Dr. Nussey was born in Mount Clemens, Michigan on July 30, 1956, to Chester and Doreen Nussey. He spent the majority of his childhood in Granada Hills, California, where he played high school basketball and placed first in an All-State Speech competition. He graduated from Kennedy High School in 1974, then attended Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he majored in English and met his future wife, Cynthia Merriman. They were married on May 20, 1978, a week after he graduated from college.

Gary had a heart of service and developed the desire to become a physician early in life. He achieved that dream, graduating from The University of Texas McGovern School of Medicine in 1983, then completing his residency at Waco Family Medicine Residency in 1986.

Dr. Nussey began his medical practice in Monahans, TX, then spent ten years in Snyder before moving to San Angelo in 2001, where he worked at Shannon Clinic. During his remarkable career, Dr. Nussey delivered hundreds of babies and cared for West Texans through every stage of their lives. His practice included his clinic, the emergency room, the hospital and several nursing homes, as well as the mission field. Additionally, he served as Medical Director of the San Angelo State School. He derived great joy from the unique opportunity to touch countless lives in such a special way.

Gary was a skilled private pilot and a member of the Civil Air Patrol, where achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Lt Col Nussey spent several years in command of the San Angelo Composite Squadron, where he mentored many cadets and passed on his love of aviation and service to others.

As a man of deep faith, he was active in the Church throughout his life and completed many mission trips to Central America. Gary served as an Elder at Christian Church of San Angelo and later taught Sunday School at Grape Creek Baptist Church. He also served on the board of Cornerstone Christian School.

A man of many interests, his top hobbies included building model trains and planes, photography, and running. Gary had a lifetime love of learning and could often be found perusing museums from open to close, contemplating the exhibits and reading every available placard. Despite his notable career, many hobbies and significant volunteer work, he invested the majority of his energy into his wife and four children and was first and foremost a family man.

Dr. Gary Nussey is survived by his wife, Cynthia Nussey of San Angelo; his sister, Bonnie Nussey of Snyder; and his children Dr. Sandra Hansen and her husband Jeffrey Hansen who reside in Syracuse; New York; James Nussey, who lives in Roanoke, Texas; Andria Nussey and her fiancé John Alex Villarreal of San Angelo; and Krista Nussey and her partner Carter Bristol of Fort Worth; and one granddaughter, Kira Mathews of San Angelo.

The Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, July 26, 2024, at Grape Creek Baptist Church in San Angelo, Texas with Pastor Chad Devenport officiating.
