James Roy Creed Childress

James (Jim) Roy Creed Childress passed away October 16, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born in San Angelo, Texas on the 4th of July 1942 to Anabel Scott Childress and James E Childress. He was raised in Mertzon, Texas and graduated from Mertzon High School in 1960.

Jim was the epitome of a southern gentleman. He would always stand and take his hat off when a lady approached where he was sitting, even in the last months when it was a struggle to stand. He was the most unselfish person you’d ever meet. He didn’t want anyone worrying about him and would rarely ask anyone for help. Yet, if you needed his help with anything, he’d be right there in a heartbeat. His family was the most important thing in his life. He loved spending time with his grandkids and going to their sporting events. He was their number one fan. At 80 years old, you’d often find him out on the golf course, chasing that little white ball with the best of them. And he was pretty good! He won many local tournaments and scrambles. His other favorite thing to do was dancing. Him and his wife Gail traveled all over Texas, following their favorite bands and then dancing most of the night.

He was survived by his wife Gail Childress, his son James Childress Jr, daughter Tracy Honea, and son Gary Childress and his wife Estrella Childress. Grandchildren Cortni, Austin, Sierra and her husband Tyler, Justus, Madisen, Emma, Ellie and Evie, and his great grandchildren Parker and Titus. His sisters Billie Wunderl, and Brenda Olson, and his brother Johnny Childress and his wife Connie.

A memorial service will be held at Glen Meadows Baptist Church in San Angelo, October 20, 2024, at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to West Texas Boys Ranch, Shriners Children’s Hospital or the charity of your choice.
