John Norman Guess

February 18, 1934 — October 4, 2017

John Norman Guess, 83 of Mertzon, Texas went to his Heavenly home, on Wednesday morning, October 4, 2017, after suffering complications from a fall. Norman lived a long and full life and was prepared and ready to meet His Lord and Savior. Norman was born, February 18, 1934, in Blossom, Texas to Edward and Rebecca Guess. He was raised in San Angelo, Texas, and after graduating from Lakeview High School attended San Angelo College. Norman married his high school sweetheart, and the love of his life, Evelyn Ruth Guess, on May 16th, 1952. The early days of their marriage were spent in Eastland, Texas, where their four daughters were born. Eastland was a special place for them, as it was where they began forming many close and life-long friendships. While in Eastand, Norman was part of a gospel quartet, The Gospelaires. His love for gospel music spanned his lifetime, and brought much joy to his life. Norman, Ruth, and girls moved to Big Lake, Texas, in 1962 where he began working at Glasscock Chevrolet with Bill and Elizabeth Glasscock. Norman continued his career as Dealer/Owner for 55 years. His daughters were all blessed to work with him, at different times throughout his life time. Norman was very involved and active in the community for many years. He served as a church deacon, (FBC Big Lake & Mertzon) and held numerous offices, in local government and civic organizations. He was an avid follower of the Reagan County Owls and was awarded, along with Ruth, as Life-Long Boosters of the Year. His Lord, family, church, and his business were the passions of his life. After losing Ruth, Norman found happiness, with Sue Baze, whom he married in 2013. They made their home in Mertzon, Texas, where he made many new friends. He was preceded in death, by his wife, Ruth; parents, Edward and Rebecca; sister, Nancy Bell; brother-in-law, Warren Aldridge; son-in-law, Wayne Poynor; and father & mother-in-law, Roland and Laura Swaringin. Norman is survived by his wife, Sue; his four daughters; Susan George & husband Mike; Janet Davis & husband B.J.; Marla Poynor & husband Britt; Lori Jones & husband Terry; His sister, Marion Aldridge; brother-in-law, Jimmy Bell; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn & Walt Templin and Howard & Sue Ann Swaringin; Grandchildren Jennifer & Edward Rivas, John George, Julie & Brad Wachsmann, Casey & Melanie Kohutek, Paul & Michelle Jones, Shawn & Anita Poynor, Allison & Joe Camacho, Ellen & Justin Clark, Clay & Joy Butler, Casey & Krystle Poynor, Megan & West Herbert; Numerous great grandchildren, cousins, nieces & nephews; Also survived by Sue’s children, Carla Baze, Brad Baze, David & Wendy Baze; & their children Tanner Baze & Juston Baze. Services will be Saturday, October 7th, at First Baptist Church (Big Lake), at 2pm & followed with graveside services, in Glenrest Cemetery (Big Lake); Visitation will be from 10:30-11:30 at the church. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be James Smith, Ronnie Reeger, Wade Jones, Bill Schneemann, Tim Sellman, Dale Fisher, Johnny Poynor, Buck Owens, Richard Warriner, Sammy Dodd, Mark Noland, Eddie Martin, Denny Morris, Sid Sullenger, Wes Thiers, and Walter Flowers. The service will be officiated by Darrell Marion and several other pastor friends.
