Betty J. Howell White

March 28, 1931 — September 1, 2016

Our loving Mother, Nanny, and Sister, Betty Jo Howell White entered her heavenly home September 1, 2016, at the age of 85 in San Angelo, Texas. Betty was born in Rowena, Texas to Hallie and Essa Howell. She attended grade school in Eola, Texas and graduated from San Angelo High School. She continued her education at Abilene Christian College. When she returned to San Angelo, she worked for the Veterans Administration and Murphy & Smith Law Firm. She soon met the love of her life, a handsome young Air Force pilot, Lt. Darrell White. They married December 18, 1954 and she began her life as an officer’s wife. She proudly fulfilled her role as she kept the home fires burning while Darrell defended our country. They were blessed with three children. She spent many hours as their Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout Den Mother, as well as their room mother. She was always supportive of whatever activity they were involved with. The greatest gift she instilled in her family was her love of God and her faith. The family returned to San Angelo when Darrell retired and she began her career with the San Angelo Independent School District working in the Special Education department. She retired in 1995 after 22 years. She loved to travel and explore new places, especially when she finally got to go to Europe. She was an avid bowler and played in many leagues as a young woman and up into her later years. She was an amazing Bridge player and especially enjoyed her church Bridge group. A favorite past time was attending plays and being a supporter of the Angelo Civic Theatre and the Arts at ASU. Betty was a member of the Concho Pearl Lions Club, an active member of the Shannon Auxiliary, and regularly delivered Meals for the Elderly. She was a devoted member of Johnson Street Church of Christ. She and Darrell taught Sunday School and Children’s Worship Hour for many years. Later, she served alongside Darrell in working with students at the Christian Campus Center at Angelo State University. When the grandchildren came along, she truly found her calling; they were her joy. She made every attempt to attend as many of their activities as she could. She was always there to offer support and encouragement. She just loved spending time with them. You could always count on Nanny, “Best grandmother ever!” Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Darrell, her father Hallie Howell, her mother and step-father Essa and Joe Easterwood, her brothers Osmar Bruce Howell, Gaylon Wayne Howell, Bobby Lynn Howell, nephew Gary Lynn Howell, and grandson Brandon Truett. Survivors include her daughter Sandra Truett and husband Thomas of San Angelo; two sons Kevin White and wife Melanie of Burleson, Texas and Bruce White and wife Kim of Billings, MT; six grandchildren, Kristen Truett Suprobo and husband Josh of Plano, Texas, Brenda Truett Henry and husband Sean of New York, N.Y., Garrick White of Reston, VA., Aubrey White of Houston, TX., Rachel and Tanner White of Billings, MT; great-grandchildren Rianti and Buntolo Suprobo of Plano, Texas; her sister Billie Jean Blackburn of San Angelo, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00P.M. – 8:00 P.M., Friday, September 9, 2016 at Harper Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Johnson Street Church of Christ with Tommy King officiating. Interment will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to thank Dr. Carl Anderton and Penny for their continued support and care. A very special thank you to the amazing staff at New Haven Assisted Living Center for their wonderful care. To Hospice of San Angelo and our angel Pamela, “Thank you and God bless.” In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in San Angelo, 14 W. Twohig Ave., San Angelo, Texas 76903. (325-653-1724), or a favorite charity. “In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:2-3 Family and friends may share condolences and sign the online register book at www.harper-funeralhome.com
