Cal was born January 14, 1926 in Memphis Tennessee to Calvin Meehan McGowan and Pauline McFall McGowan. The family was a longtime resident of Cotton Plant, Arkansas. He graduated high school from Columbia Academy in Columbus, Tennessee. In 1942 and had started attending Texas A&M University for two years before being drafted into the Army Air Corp during World War II. After the war, Cal returned to Texas A&M University where he received a B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry in 1948. Following graduation, Cal went to work for Jerry Puckett on his ranch in Fort Stockton. It was the beginning of a career that Cal would cherish the rest of his life. Ranching was never work for Cal, he loved every minute of it and soon it would bring him to the San Angelo area in 1949 where he would meet the next love of his life. He had seen a picture of a very pretty girl on a ranch magazine cover and wanted to meet her. His friend, Stanley Frank, knew the pretty young lady and set up a blind date. The rest is history. Cal married Charles Anne “Sug” Walling November 17, 1951 in San Angelo. Together they farmed and ranched in four counties, including Tom Green, Menard, Concho and Schleicher counties as well in Arkansas. They were members of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. Cal also had a passion for raising quarter horses which he often jokingly said, “Was his only true vice.” Cal was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Sug McGowan, parents, and his brother James Bagby McGowan. Survivors include his brother, John Meehan McGowan II of Phoenix AZ, three daughters, Anne McGowan Schooler and husband Kirtes D of College Station, Elizabeth McGowan Blount and husband James of Edmond, OK, Jane McGowan Brigman and husband Fred C. III of San Angelo, his son, Calvin Walling “Wally” and wife Cora of San Angelo, nine grandchildren, Matthew and Athalie Schooler, Evelyn and Laura Blount, Calvin and Sarah Jane Brigman, Cally Kothmann and husband Will, Ogden McGowan and wife Amy, Dorothy Anne DiOrio and husband Matt, three great grandchildren, John Wilson, and Cora Kothmann and Cal McGowan, and special friend Nancy Shields.
