Calvin H. Sugg, Jr.

August 19, 1937 — February 4, 2025

Calvin H. Sugg, Jr., 87, of San Angelo passed away peacefully at home on February 4, 2025, after a brief decline. Cal was born in 1937 at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo and lived his youth and teen years in both West Texas and Southern California with his parents, Calvin H. Sugg and Dora Mapes Sugg, and his brother Joel D. Sugg. After graduating from South Pasadena High School in 1955, he attended college at TCU and Tulane and then entered military service in 1959. After two years in the Army, largely stationed in northern France, Cal returned to Texas and in 1963, earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Southern Methodist University and married Donna Clyatt Sugg. Later that year, they moved permanently to San Angelo.

Throughout his life, Cal devoted himself to his family and community, managing and developing the family’s ranching and land interests with his beloved brother Joel and serving on various boards for many years, including the West Texas Boys Ranch, San Angelo Parks Commission, and Fort Concho. Cal was a lead participant in the restoration and development of Fort Concho since the 1980s and contributed to the fruition of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts along with Donna and Joel and Suzanne Sugg. His legacy of philanthropic and community efforts also includes Angelo State University and other local institutions.

A loving husband and involved and caring father, Cal was a great friend who, since the early 1970s, relished hosting and guiding multiple generations of family and friends on innumerable hunts and other adventures in Irion County, Colorado, and beyond. His deep knowledge of the San Angelo region, its history and its present, has been an invaluable resource to all who knew him. Cal was known for his astute judgement and integrity, his kind and curious interest in everyone he met, and his sharp sense of humor. We are honored to have known and loved him, benefitting from his guidance and example of how to be a gentleman, as well as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son and brother, and friend.

Calvin H. Sugg, Jr. is survived by his wife Donna, children Katherine Sugg (Brian Phillips) and Ike Sugg, grandchildren Thomas Phillips (Mariabelén Segovia), Sarah Phillips, and Patrick Phillips, sister-in-law Suzanne, and nieces and nephews including Leslie Miller, Erin Sugg, Penelope Sugg, Michael Sugg (Dorothy), Christopher Sugg, and Julia Hochberg (Joshua). He was predeceased by his parents, brother Joel, and sisters Jean Sugg and Marion ‘Sis’ Miller. The family thanks his caregivers and doctors, especially Dr. Chris Haddad, Dr. Carl Anderton, and Andrea Perez of Quality Caring Hands. A private service for family and friends was held at Fairmont Cemetery on February 8, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to Fort Concho, West Texas Boys Ranch, or the charity of your choice.
