Carl Winfred Covin

August 21, 1949 — August 9, 2024

Carl Winfred Covin died on August 9, 2024, at the age of 74 in San Angelo, Texas. Carl was born on August 21, 1949, in Houston, Texas, to Ovetra and Ike Covin. After graduating from Spring Branch High School in 1967, he attended the University of Texas at Austin where he met many lifelong friends and his wife, Judy. During his years as a longhorn, he attended the Universidad de las Américas Puebla in Puebla, Mexico, and helped a friend open a restaurant in Park City, Utah. He graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Latin American Studies in 1973, and married Judy the next year on August 24, 1974. The couple moved to Houston, where they started a family and Carl opened an industrial supply business with his father. In 2018, Carl and Judy moved to San Angelo, Texas to be near family and escape the traffic and hurricanes of Houston.

Carl loved reading, music, crossword puzzles (always completed in pen), and watching his favorite teams, the Longhorns and the Astros. He loved visits to the family beach house, hunting trips with good friends and the ‘19th hole’ after golf (golf was not actually required) with one special friend. More than the activities themselves, Carl cherished the camaraderie and time spent with good friends and family. His long-winded stories, often filled with humor, were a testament to his experiences and enthusiasm for the good times.

Carl leaves behind a loving family: wife, Judy; son, Steven; daughter, Shannon Wehner and her husband, Brooks; mother, Ovetra Covin; sister, Sunny Kelly and her husband Dennis; mother-in-law, Dorothy Yeary; brother-in-law, Bobby Yeary; grandchildren, Lucas, Andrew, Sophia, Jaxon, and Hattie; nephews, Thomas Kelly, Devin Kelly and wife Tanya, and Joseph Kelly. Carl was preceded in death by his father, Ike. He will also be missed by many friends, extended family, and the River Rats.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
