Earlo Smith

February 15, 1921 — March 25, 2016

Earlo Smith, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed peacefully at his home on Good Friday, March 25. He was born on February 15, 1921 to Lewis and Noma Smith at Camp Verde, Texas. He was the seventh of nine children and attended school in Center Point, Texas, before working on the Davenport and Gallagher ranches. His first love of horses and ranch life was interrupted by WWII. After joining the Army, he was stationed at Sioux Falls, SD where he met and married his lifelong love, Marjorie Smith in Sioux Falls, SD in November, 1943. Earlo served in the European Theater and was attached to the 12th Air Force 27th Fighter Group. He was stationed in Italy, France, Belgium, Austria and was in Paris, France on VE Day, 1945. After the war, he returned to Texas and later moved to Iowa during which time he and Marjorie had four children. The family moved back to Texas and settled in San Angelo in 1956. There he was employed by Angelo Refrigeration. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Noma Smith; his brothers, Amos, Alton, J.D. and Graydon; two sisters, Cleora Aldridge and Maureen Smith. His is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marjorie Smith, two sons, David Smith and wife Carol and Steve Smith; two daughters, Janell Hoelscher and husband Dwane, Noma Perrine and husband, Keith; brother, Odis Smith of San Angelo; sister Golda Stankovich of Houston. Surviving grandchildren and spouses are Brantley Hoelscher and Robbi, Kari Beeles and Shawn, Kristi Bayless and Matt, Justin Smith and Carly, Miranda Cooke and John, Terry Stinnett and Brandi, Jackie Smith and Justin, Kelley Avants and Shay, Wade Smith, Heather Kilgore and Tony and Hayley Perrine. Earlo and Marjorie were blessed with 21 great grandchildren who loved their Papa Earlo dearly. His wishes in life were to have a ranch and horses for his family. He excelled as an electrician, plumber and in commercial refrigeration and raised four children instead of his beloved horses. A funeral service will be held at Harper Funeral Home Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at 10:00 AM with burial to follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
