Elbert attended Lakeview High School, he quit school and decided working was more important than school. He worked the family business of moving houses, which taught him the skills he used on his next ventures. Elbert's career consisted of Concho Concrete, Fiveash Construction pouring slabs for new housing constructions for Wayne Vick, Freeman Pickett, Ted Humes, Tony Jones, Dennis Robison and Reese Albert. His next calling came from friend JB Fraley, JB coaxed him into the oil & gas industry. Arroyo Drilling and MEG Petroleum materialized from this collaboration. Elbert's last field of work was in Texas and New Mexico for Boyd & McWilliams, drilling and completing wells with the help of family friend Tim Ponsetti. He retired shortly after.

PawPaw enjoyed teaching Sunday School, driving the church buses, coaching, supporting and attending his sons and grandkids in sport activities. He enjoyed family gatherings, fishing, raising Boer Goats and watching his Texas Tech and Kansas City Chiefs football teams. He was generous and giving, quick to offer money or help others. He will be greatly missed and it will not be the same without Pawpaw.
