Elizabeth “J. “Josie” Broene, 72, of San Angelo went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 in San Angelo. Josie was born December 22, 1944 in Detroit, MI to Brant Lee and Ruth James Doty. She grew up in southern Michigan and graduated from High School in 1962. Josie went on to attend Michigan State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1966. She accepted a teaching job with the Department of Defense and moved to Okinawa, Japan. During her time in Japan, she met the love of her life, Robert L. Broene, who was stationed in Japan while serving in the United States Navy. They were married on June 25, 1970 in Lansing, Michigan. As the wife of a Navy man, she and Bob traveled all over the world together living in numerous cities in the United States and abroad. Josie was voted the “Navy Wife of the Year” for Misawa, Japan in 1980. She would continue as a substitute teacher where ever they were stationed. Josie also worked as an on-air personality doing the weather for the Armed Forces Television Network in Misawa, Japan and was even a D.J. personality at a local hospital in Edzell, Scotland. She and Bob eventually moved to San Angelo where she would spend 25 years as the church secretary for Johnson Street Church of Christ. She loved her church home and family. She was a dedicated secretary and Sunday school teacher and was involved in many ministries for the Church. Josie also volunteered for many years at Rust Street Ministries here in San Angelo. She was loving daughter, sister and wife who devoted her life to her family and friends and her church family. In her spare time, she loved sewing clothes and making baby bags for all the moms at church, painting landscapes in oil and acrylic, riding dirt bikes, and most of all traveling the world with Bob on cruise ships and by land in their incredible cars. Josie was a kind, beautiful, amazing woman, who loved giving of herself and her time to help others. Her life and legacy of love through giving will remain in our hearts forever and we will dearly miss her! Josie was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Robert L. “Bob” Broene, of San Angelo; her Mother, Ruth Doty, of Holt, MI; her sisters, Sally Garman, of Marshall, MI and Margaret “Peggy” Athy and her husband Brian, of Lansing, MI; her brothers, Brant Doty and his wife, Karna, of Madison, WI, Tim Doty and his wife Louise, of Detroit, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
