Fred Karl "Pat" Jungk

Fred Karl “Pat” Jungk, Jr., 87, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at home. He was born March 20, 1930 to Fred Karl and Zola Parker Jungk. Pat grew up and spent most of his life in Sonora. He was baptized in the Baptist Church as a teenager; graduated from Sonora High School; and held many jobs including helping build the Sonora hospital, working on seismograph crews in West Texas and was the “fix-it man” for his mother at the family motel, the Old Spanish Trail camp, established in 1928 by his parents. Pat served in the Army during the Korean War from February 1951 thru December 1952. After serving his Country, he attended and graduated Barber School in San Antonio. Pat married Loretta Hendricks and they had a son, Gregory Allen Jungk. Pat was a barber in Eldorado for several years. He married Dorthy Gulden on August 9, 1964 in San Angelo and worked as a plumber’s helper. In 1965, after his mother’s retirement, they moved to Sonora to operate the motel for the next 45 years until age and health problems forced them to retire. They had a daughter, Karla Jan Jungk, who helped run the motel until she graduated from high school and went off to college. Pat had many talents and could fix almost anything. He and Dorthy did all of the repairs and remodeling including roofing, painting, plumbing, etc. over the years. Pat also had his pilot’s license and his own plane. He loved fishing, visiting friends, meeting strangers who stayed at the motel, country music, playing his guitars and learning to clog in his 60’s. Pat loved it so much and was the only man in the West Texas Cloggers group. He loved “his girls” and considered them some of his best friends. Pat also loved entertaining and playing with his grandchildren as well as all other children. Pat is proceeded in death by his parents; sister Daphne Wheatley, who served as a nurse in the Army; niece Sherry Wilder; and parents-in-law Frank and Billie Gulden. Pat is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorthy of Sonora, son Greg of Odessa, daughter Karla Steppe and husband Scott of San Angelo; Granddaughters, Tori Smart and husband Gary of Odessa, Victoria Steppe of San Angelo and Hailey and Morgan Jungk of Odessa; great grandsons, Barrett Kael and Holden Zachary (who will arrive in late March ) Smart. Pat is also survived by his sister Mary Jungk Paris of Santa Fe, NM; nieces Debra Peveto and Phyllis Fukuda both of Bridge City, Lisa Stringfield and husband Randy of Los Alamos, NM; nephew Jeffery Wheatley and wife Cindy of Orange; a special cousin, Joe Mussey and wife Joyce of Alpine; brothers-in-law Frank Gulden of Miles and Charles Gulden of Yuma, AZ; special daughter adopted by love, Maggie Coronado, along with her husband, children, and grandchildren; and special daughter and mother to his granddaughters, Driscilla “Drissy” Hicks Jungk Littlepage and her husband Scott Littlepage of Oklahoma City, OK; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many many special animals over his many years and his most recent “baby” Cotton who he called his “little bunny rabbit”. During Pat’s recent illness Kay Rowlett cared for him as well as the rest of the family. Her bigger than life personality made her part of our family. Services will be held at a later date in Sonora.
