Gus F. Eckhardt, Md

Gus Fuess Eckhardt, MD, fondly referred to as Cuss-n-Gus, died at home October 21, 2018, at age 105. Born in Yorktown, TX and raised in El Paso, TX, he is survived by son Robert (Bob) Eckhardt and wife Karen of San Antonio, two nephews and companion Merrill Varian. Dr. Eckhardt attended Baylor University, graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School and completed his residency in general surgery at Belleview Hospital in New York City. In 1940 he married Mary Elizabeth (Woody) Fatherree, MD, taught at UT Medical School at Galveston then moved to San Angelo in 1947 where they raised two sons Bob and Gus, Jr. Mary Elizabeth died in 1975 and Gus, Jr., of Waco, October 1, 2018. In 1977 he married Edith Rumbaugh White who died in 1998. Her daughter Ann White Brown and son De White reside in Austin. Dr. Eckhardt was affiliated with the Doctors’ Clinic, Shannon Hospital and served as a physician for West Texas Boys’ Ranch. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for almost 70 years. The memorial service will be held there Saturday, October 27th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice or The Gus Eckhardt Lectureship Series, Shannon Medical Center, Attn: Suzi Reynolds, P.O. Box 1879, San Angelo, TX 76902.
