JoAnn Brininstool completed her journey on this earth on November 17, 2017 at the age of 88. She was born in Maud, Oklahoma on August 8, 1929 to Allen and Lucy Mitchell. The family briefly lived in California before settling in Carlsbad, NM. After high school, she worked as a telephone operator along with her sister. She attended College of the Southwest in Hobbs, NM and in 1968 she completed a six year summer program in organization management at the University of Houston. After moving to Jal, NM she and her husband, Bill Brininstool, raised two sons, managed the family ranch, and had various business. She was owner, publisher and editor of The Jal Record from 1966 to 1970. In the 1960’s they purchased an oil field trucking company which later became XL Transportation Company. JoAnn served on the Jal school board from 1972-1983 and as president for two years. She was appointed by Governor Garrey Caruthers to Serve on The Health Department Advisory Committee for The University of New Mexico Cancer Center. JoAnn was active with the Republican Party serving as a board member on the New Mexico State Platform Committee. JoAnn loved to travel and visited many exciting places but was most proud of being in the first group of Americans to visit China in 1972 after the travel ban was lifted by Richard Nixon. She was designer and architect of two of the family homes both of which showed her talent and creativity. When she and Bill decided to part ways she moved to San Angelo where she spent the last thirty years enjoying life and pursuing her love of stained glass. Her talent and her eye for the unusual were admired by all who knew her. She was a proud member of the Chickasaw Tribe and in her later years she went from traveling the world to making trips to Windstar with her friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Donny Mitchell of San Angelo and J.A. Mitchell of Colorado, her sister Peggy Branch of San Angelo, and her eldest son Lindsey Brininstool of Lovington NM. She is survived by her son Mitchell and his wife TJ, their sons, Blake and Ryan and Lindsey’s daughter Anna Lisa. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, November 20, 2017 at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
