Joseph Albert Lucas

Joseph Albert Lucas was born January 1, 1925, to Thomas Lucas and Danna Lucas in Cuero, Dewitt County, Texas. Joseph attended elementary school in Concrete, Texas and graduated from Daule High School in Cuero. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. at Camp Lejuene, N.C., and served from 1943-1945 with rank of A.C.K. He was listed as a Rifle Marksman. He married the love of his life, Alice McGuffin, July 10, 1946, and to this union a son, James Albert, and a daughter, Katherine Louise, were born. Joseph was an athlete, playing Semi-professional baseball in the Negro League, from 1946-1950. One of his major teams included the Legion Allstars. He also played for Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas as he was seeking an education for his life career, teaching. In addition, he played in Canada. After graduating from Huston-Tillotson and receiving his teachers certificate, he taught and coached at Asberry High in Yoakum, Texas, from 1950-1956. His next promotion was principal of Davenport School, Big Lake, Texas in 1958. In 1964, the school district integrated and Joseph accepted a position as teacher at Reagan County High School and later became principal of Reagan County Jr. High School. He was a member of Bethlem Baptist Church Big Lake, Tx & San Angelo Greater IME San Angelo, Tx. Toward the end of his educational career, he was co-principal of the high school and worked in administration until his retirement in 1990. Joseph was a Life Member of VFW and served on the draft board in McCamey, Texas for 13 years. He was past President of Lions Club, Commander of Roy Rose Post #253 of the American Legion, Grand Marshall of the Santa Rita Days parade. He loved to play golf and won numerous trophies of which he was very proud. Joseph lived an amazing life, was a fantastic father, putting God first and family a close second. In addition, he was a great husband, as he and Alice were married 72 years. He was a sweet, gentle soul, loved and respected by all who knew him. A life worthwhile! He leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Alice Lucas, San Angelo, Tx, son, James Lucas, of Victoria, Tx, daughter, Katherine Lucas, San Angelo, Tx. Grandsons: Jarvin Lucas, San Antonio, Tx, Justin Lucas, New Jersey, Jared Lucas, Victoria, Tx, and Jamil Lucas, San Angelo, Tx. Sister: Erma Jean James(Edward), San Antonio, Tx, Seven great-grandchildren and a host of special friends so dearly loved by him. He is preceded in death by his parents Thomas D. Lucas Jr. and Danna Mae Enoch Lucas, sister Maxine Williams, brothers Clyde Lucas and Clarence Lucas. The viewing was from 12:30 P.M. - 2:00P.M, Saturday, January 19, 2018 at San Angelo Greater IME with the funeral service to follow at 2:30 P.M. The graveside service with Military Honors was 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero, Texas.
