Larry Arthur Unger

Larry Unger, affectionately known as Papa Larry to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully at his home in San Angelo on January 29, 2025, at the age of 77. He was born on October 31, 1947, in San Francisco, California, to Melvin and Jearldean Walker. After his parents' divorce, his mother married John Unger, and Larry, along with his older brother Dennis, adopted the Unger name.

As a child, Larry enjoyed playing baseball, hunting, and fishing. At the age of 17, with his mother's permission, he joined the United States Navy, serving alongside his brother Dennis on the USS Garcia as a Gunner’s Mate. During his time in the Navy, Larry earned his GED. After serving for two years, he returned to Texas and vowed never to leave again.

On May 16, 1969, Larry joined the San Angelo Police Department, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant.

On May 4, 1991, Larry married the love of his life, Rita Unger, in San Angelo, Texas, and became a father to her son, Kelly Woodard, who would follow in Larry's footsteps as a Texas Peace Officer.

On September 22, 2002, Larry became a grandfather with the birth of his first grandchild, Taylor. Larry was in awe of Taylor, as she shared the birthday of his beloved wife, Rita.

After 34 years serving the citizens of San Angelo, Larry retired from the police department on October 31, 2003, which was also his 56th birthday.

Following his retirement, Larry continued his passion for hunting and fishing. He was not a man who could sit still; if the sun was up, he was always on the move. When he was at home Larry was kept company by his four faithful dogs, Bear, Haley, Skipper, and Tessie.

On October 26, 2011, Larry welcomed the birth of his second grandchild, Tanner. Tanner developed a passion for football and, more recently, baseball—much like his grandfather. Larry loved discussing baseball with Tanner.

In May 2023, Larry was placed on hospice care after a brief stay in the hospital. In his own words, Larry expressed, "If I'm going to die, I'm going to die at home with my wife and dog!" True to his independent spirit, Larry defied expectations and continued to live for another 18 months despite doctors predicting a shorter timeframe.

Larry is survived by his wife of 34 years, Rita; his son, Kelly, and his wife, Tiffany; his grandchildren, Taylor and Tanner; and his beloved fur baby, Tessie.
