Leland Dean Pope passed away October 10, 2017. He was born September 21, 1930 to Elmer and Florence (Millwee) Pope in Southard, Blaine Co., Oklahoma. He graduated from high school then attended Oklahoma A & M college where he received his Bachelor degree, commissioned 2nd Lt in the U.S. Army infantry in 1952 then received his Master’s Degree in 1956 from Oklahoma State University. Leland married Helen Prickett on June 1, 1952, went on active duty in the Army and served as a Lt in Korea until 1954. They were married 65 years. Leland was head of the Business Dept. of Gallup High school for 15 years. He then quit teaching after going into retail business. At one time they had five stores. He retired in 1990, moved to Florida until 2009 when they moved to San Angelo, Texas to be closer to family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Florence Pope and his brother, Frankie. He is survived by his wife, Helen, two daughters, Christy Butler, Julie Mills, grandchildren, Brandy Hawkins (Bryan), Neal Butler and one great grandchild, Hailey Hawkins. A Graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, October 16th at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene.
