Marjorie Thornton

October 6, 1928 — November 27, 2016

Marjorie Thornton passed on November 27, 2016 being reunited with her Lord and family in eternal life. Marjorie was born on October 6, 1928 in Hempstead, Texas. She is preceded by her parents Robert and Irie Cox, and sister Josephine Gaunt. She is survived by her daughter Suzanne Drawbaugh of Chantilly, Virginia, and son Kevin Thornton of San Angelo, Texas. Marjorie grew up in an idyllic community of Alvin, Texas where she and her future husband Bob were childhood sweethearts. She graduated from Alvin High School in 1946. In the Alvin Yellow Jacket yearbook Marjorie was listed as the Most Beautiful Girl in her class; National Honor Society, and Coronation Queen. Upon graduation Marjorie enrolled at Baylor University in the fall of 1946. After attending college two years, Marjorie and Bob were married February 15, 1948, a marriage which would strengthen and sustain them for over fifty years. The young couple began their life together when they moved to Abilene, Texas where Bob joined the family business of Thornton’s Department Store ‘A City Within Itself. Soon after their first child Suzanne was born in May of 1949. Marjorie and Bob were active members of the First Baptist Church in Abilene until their move, in the late 1960’s to Scottsdale, Arizona. There they opened their own successful business. Their son Kevin was born in October of 1967 in Phoenix, Arizona. Returning to Texas, the family eventually set down roots in San Angelo, Texas. Marjorie was a member of Southland Baptist church community and active member in the San Angelo Garden Club and numerous bridge clubs. Marjorie was a devoted Christian, wife, and precious mother; a wonderful cook famous for her lemon meringue pies, and sour cream enchiladas; a devoted friend who would do anything to help others; her parties were cherished by all who attended; her smile and twinkly eyes would light up a room, but more importantly she made a difference in all the lives she touched. The Memorial Service will be 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Southland Baptist church with Rev. Taylor Sandlin officiating. Memorials may be made to the Southland Baptist Missionary Fund.
