Philip Arthur Neighbors died in full confidence of his loving Savior surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren on February 3, 2016 in San Angelo, TX at the age of 64. Phil was born on January 30, 1952 in Pomona, CA to Eugene and Beth Neighbors. He graduated from Angelo State University in 1974 with a B.A. in Political Science and Government. He met and married his wife Susan Hall of 41 years in San Angelo. He began his career as the Director of Development for the West Texas Chamber of Commerce based in Abilene from 1976 until 1986. He served as vice president of the Kerrville Chamber of Commerce from 1986 until 1993, and then as the President of the San Marcos Chamber from 1993 until moving to San Angelo in 2006. While Phil was a public servant and devoted to his career and community, his main priorities were his family and church. He loved to travel with his beloved wife and delighted in his children’s accomplishments. He could often be found at the events of his grandchildren and actively participated in their daily lives. He was a dedicated member and deacon of Southland Baptist Church and volunteered many hours to serve college kids, homebound members, and many others. He was a gentle and humble man that loved his family well and sought to love and serve everyone he met. Phil is survived by his his wife Susan of San Angelo; son Jeff Neighbors of San Marcos; daughter Janet (Neighbors) Abernathy and husband Bryan Abernathy of San Angelo, his four grandchildren Kaden Abernathy (9), Mary-Kate Abernathy (7), Everly Abernathy (3), and Philippa “Pippa” Abernathy (4 months) of San Angelo; brother Paul Neighbors of Gilbert, AZ; brother Doug Neighbors, and his wife Marie Neighbors, and niece Jessica Neighbors of Huntington Beach, CA; father-in-law, John Hall and mother-in-law Mary Lou Hall of San Angelo; and many other brother and sister in laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Beth Neighbors. Visitation and viewing will be held on Friday, February 5 at Southland Baptist Church from 4:00-6:30 pm. A memorial service is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 5 at Southland Baptist Church. Dr. Taylor Sandlin will officiate. The family asks everyone to wear green (Phil’s favorite color) to help celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers please donate blood and platelets, or make a memorial to Southland Baptist in his name. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Community Medical Center, the staff of Southland Baptist Church, and the many friends and church family that prepared meals, babysat, prayed, and showed love to them during this hard time.
