Queen E. Crenshaw

Queen Ethel Crenshaw went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 4th, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. in her interim home in Round Rock, Texas. She was born on a Wednesday, March 5th, 1924 in Taylor, Texas. She was the youngest and last living of eight children born into the marriage of Albert and Mary Merrell. Soon after, the family moved to San Angelo, Texas where she attended Blackshear School and later, graduated with honors on May 28, 1943. She continued her Education at Prairie View A&M College where she graduated with high honors and received her teaching degree. She then returned to San Angelo, and began her first teaching assignment at Hammond Elementary School with San Angelo Independent School District. When the first school opened in Sonora, Texas in 1948, she was hired as the first black teacher. After five years teaching in Sonora, she taught at Blackshear and other schools within the district. She later retired from Bowie Elementary, finishing a teaching career that spanned 32 years. During that time, she met and married Reverend Dr. Fred D. Crenshaw, who proceeded her in death. She was a beloved wife, daughter, sister, mother, godmother, grandmother, teacher, community leader, ‘Diva’, confidant and disciplinarian; who was highly respected by all. She accepted the Lord at an early age and was a member of Greater St. Paul AME Church of San Angelo, Texas. Later, along with her husband Rev. F. D. Crenshaw, she helped to organize the I.M.E. Church in San Angelo and Lampasas, Texas, serving the church and community well over 65 years. During the journey of her ongoing illness, Momma became a member, under watch-care, of: “Sweet Home the Pinnacle of Praise,” 3200 Sunrise Road, Round Rock, Texas; with Senior Pastor Dr. Dante’ D. Wright. She was preceded in death by one brother, Curtis Merrell and his twin baby sister, five sisters: Ollie Lewis, Sallie Powers, Mary Kelly-Burton, Annie Stallings, and Larlee Robison. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Sarita Ann Ferguson (Tyrone), two grandchildren, LarQueen Brown (Louis), Tyrone A. D. “Tad” Ferguson, and three great-grandchildren: Jeremiah, Imani, and Caleb Brown, all of Round Rock, TX. A goddaughter, Mary Frances Bradley-Owens of San Diego, CA, nephews: Haywood Owens (Cleo) of Killeen, Duke Richardson (Dianna) of San Angelo, TX, Glenn Robison of San Bernardino, CA, nieces: Maude Davis (Dave) of Las Vegas, NV, Ollie Dean Harris of San Bernardino, CA, a special adopted nephew, Clarence Richards (Jean), and a host of relatives, church family and friends. The Family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M., Friday, August 12, 2016 at Harper Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 13, 2016 at United Community Church with Pastor Jeremy S. Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Fairmount Cemetery.
