Ruby Jean Jenkins Smith

March 1, 1933 — August 27, 2016

Ruby Jean Jenkins Smith of San Angelo died Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the age of 83. She was born on March 1, 1933 in Novice, TX to Lister Towner Jenkins and Ruby Lee Gray Jenkins. She was the sixth of nine children. She graduated High School in 1950. Jean married James C. Smith on June 1, 1968. She grew up a “country girl” something that would stay in her heart forever, even though marriage moved her to town. She loved family reunions, camping with her brothers and sisters; especially going to the family farm. She retired from RG Barry in 1990. She loved being a Mam Ma, Me Ma to her grandchildren. She enjoyed picking them up from school while their parents were working. She fussed at them when she thought they needed it. Those who met her at the gates of Heaven were grandson Pvt 1st Class Jason Poindexter U.S.M.C. , her parents, brothers Quince, Wes, and Melvin, sisters, Burnell, Betty Sue, and Molly Kay. She is survived by her husband James “Jim” of the home, sister, Reba Grosshans, son, Sam Poindexter, daughters, Sherry Owen and husband Randy, Rena’ Gipson and husband Kevin. Grandchildren, James “Jimmy” Reeves, Robert Poindexter, Michael Owen, Nicole Gaitan, Kevin Gaitan, and Travis Westbrook, adopted granddaughter, Juli Wood. Great grandchildren, James, Christian, Hailey, Wyatt, Eric, Sara, Kaylee, Owen, and Elliott. Numerous nieces, nephews, and two special friends Cheyenne and Blanca. Pallbearers will be grandchildren, James Reeves, Robert Poindexter, Michael Owen, Nicole Gaitan, Kevin Gaitan, and Juli Wood. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Chris Barnette for all the kindness and care that he has shown. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 from 5-7 pm at Harper Funeral Home. A Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 10:00 am at Harper Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Family and friends can offer condolences and sign the online register book for Jean at www.harper-funeralhome.com
