Wayne Eldon King

October 11, 1937 — January 16, 2025

Wayne Eldon King was born in Cleves, Ohio on October 11, 1937, to Ferrell (Owens) Rector and Lee Thomas King.


After graduation from Taylor High School in Cleves, Ohio, he joined the United States Army. He was sent to Defense Language Institute in Monterey California studying Russian (1959) and Vietnamese (1967). Wayne was stationed at Stuttgart/Berlin/Frankfurt Germany, Phu Bai Vietnam, Arlington Hall, Virginia, and Goodfellow AFB. He retired W-3 from the Army Security Agency after 20 years of service, earning the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star citations, among others.


Wayne and his family chose San Angelo, TX as their home.


After retirement, Wayne received his BBA at Angelo State University. He then joined the San Angelo Police Department in 1977, where he made lifelong friends. Wayne retired as Assistant Chief in 1998.


Wayne loved to hunt deer and spend time at the deer lease in Blackwell, TX. He was the happiest sitting and visiting at camp with friends.


Sports was a big part of Wayne’s life. For years He attended Angelo State basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball games. When at home, he always had a game on the TV.


Wayne attended West Angelo Church of Christ and spent many happy hours attending multiple Bible study classes. He enjoyed the fellowship with his friends at WACC.


Wayne is survived by his wife Tammy of San Angelo, children Tony (Brenda) King of Flower Mound, John David (Michelle) King of Ft. Worth, Kellia (Bill) Ewing of Russell, Ky and Kathy (Matt) Summers of Cambridge, ID, and stepdaughters, Wendy (TJ) Thames of Central, SC and Samantha Smith of San Angelo. Grandchildren, Lauren (Jacob) Hays, Ashli (Micah) Bowling, Hunter Simpson, Ryan King, Kevin Brady (Shelby) King, Gabe Summers, Gus Thames, Amos Thames, Wallace Thames. Great-grandchildren, Jase and Mercy Bowling. Also surviving are sisters, Juanita Sutton of Bright, IN, Janie Booth of Cleves, OH, Margie Nash of Cincinnati, OH, Patsy Earnheart of Pickerington, OH and many beloved nieces and nephews.


Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Shirley Eugene King, Lee Arnold King, Ivan Paul King, and his beloved daughter Linda Jean King.


Visitation will be held at the Harper Funeral Home, 2606 Southland Blvd., San Angelo, TX, from 6:30pm to 7:30pm on Thursday January 23rd.


Funeral service will be performed at West Angelo Church of Christ, 3200 San Antonio St., San Angelo, TX, Friday January 24th at 10:30am. Military Burial to follow at Belvedere Cemetery.
